Revlon Colorsilk Light Ash Brown and Ardell Unred Review

Revlon Colorsilk and Ardell Unred

Revlon Colorsilk 50 Light Ash Brown and Ardell Unred

I had thought about dying my hair again and this probably tells you my decision. I’ve used this dye before; actually this same time last year. I chose to use an Ardell Unred packet to reduce brassiness. I’m beginning to wonder if the Unred is affecting the dye result. Here is my little experience dying my hair today (and hopefully the last time for a year).

Revlon Colorsilk contains the developer, hair color, a conditioner pouch, and the instructions plus gloves. It cost me $2 with a dollar off coupon at CVS. The Unred was only $1 at my Sally Beauty. I also picked up Ion Keratin Smoothing Mask which was free for renewing my Beauty Club account!

I mixed my concoction and added the Ardell Unred. It will turn the dye pretty black but it usually doesn’t affect the color… I wonder what would have changed if I hadn’t added it. But you’ll see that later ;)

Dye on roots

Dye on roots first

Determined to not get hot roots and an even color, I tried to cover my roots with dye first for at least 20 minutes. You can see in this photo my roots are saturated but the ends are poking out. Good bye little blonde hairs! The ends are porous and will take quicker than my roots. I always seem to get hot roots now-a-days.

After 20 minutes I applied the dye to the length of my hair. I was surprised that I was almost out because I never run out of dye but I usually don’t do my roots so well. Once I massaged it through my hair thoroughly I put a shopping bag over my head to keep in the heat.

The dye itself doesn’t smell too bad. It is ammonia free which is always nice and advertises UV protection. It did sting some parts of my scalp but that tends to happen which every day.

As you can see the color is quite a bit darker than I had anticipated. However, it’s completely normal and common for brunette dye to appear a shade or two darker when it is first colored. I’m still pleased with the color since it didn’t leave me with a warm dark brown like L’oreal. The color will fade considerably in a few weeks and I will update on it then.

Gasp, I look wretched! This shot shows the shade a bit more. It’s a very neutral brown with no red. My roots are another story because they are very brassy! How, I do not know. I did everything I know to do to prevent brassy hot roots and it didn’t work. They aren’t incredibly noticeable and I find it fades out after a few washes.

I like ColorSilk dye but it can be drying and damaging. I don’t use the conditioner because I hate the smell. It works just fine but I refuse to have my hair smell like it. After dying I used my new Ion Keratin mask I mentioned above and it worked nice. My hair still feels pretty soft but it’s not without damage.

Ah, here is the color when I did it last year with no Unred. You can see it’s somewhat ashier and lighter but looks very similar. This very well could be the last hair dye for a long time (gosh I hope so!). Look for a color update in a couple of weeks when I get a good trim!
